The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and Local Authority inspectors are focusing on the following priority areas in 2017:
- Falls from height: work on / adjacent to fragile roofs / materials
- Health risks: exposure to respirable crystalline silica (RCS) dust
- Duty to manage asbestos
An inspector may call on any business if its work activities fall within any of these topics of focus, even if these are not the company’s primary activities.
The inspector will assess how well the business is managing these risks. If risk management is not satisfactory, inspectors have a range of enforcement tools they may use, from verbal advice to improvement or prohibition notices. The company may be charged for the HSE’s time under the Fees for Intervention (FFI) cost recovery scheme.
